The Charvel Model Series built between 1986 and 1988, Ft. Worth, TX neckplates, were actually built in Nagano, Japan. They were production guitars. As you'd expect from any factory production-run only about 1 for every 100 produced actually play. This guitar plays. As it should, after all, I bought it off a Guitar Center manager!
She's factory original in every way with the exception of the tremolo and one of the toggle switches which was replaced at some point in time. The trem is the renowned and sought after Takeuchi Floyd Rose-licensed TRS-101. The trem really changes the appearance drastically... and for the better. Unlike the JT-6 it came with originally, the Takeuchi TRS-101 is all black and really looks sharp against the guitar's black body. It's a good looking guitar as far as Charvel Model 4s go. The replaced pickup toggle switch was chrome and tinted black to blend with the other two, but as far as size and type it's an exact match. Other than those two items (bridge and one pickup switch) the guitar appears all original in every way, in fact the TRS-101 is really a welcome addition compared to the JT-6 from a players perspective.
Nicks? Sure, it's got a few. Scratches? Sure, them too. But they're ever so minor. All of them. Frets? Sure, signs of some wear but all it does is give you the feel of how broken-in and comfy the whole guitar is. It's just a really great player all things considered. The guitar, serial #281XXX, is now rounding 24-years-old. Simply put, you'd have to be nitpicking to make the claim she has any serious flaw at all - anywhere.
Enough with the negative. This axe is a player. She's used but not abused. Shark fin mother of pearl inlays look very cool. The infamous Charvel pointy headstock is fully intact and looks great. As far as function, everything works. Play it the moment it arrives. What's most refreshing about this guitar is that all the electronics within the control cavity haven't been butchered and modified and "customized." Everything is there and functioning properly. The J50BC humbucker (only other model that got the J50BC is the flagship neck-through Model 6) really can tear you a new hole. The neck and middle J200s (remember J200s are bi-level stacked humbuckers, NOT single-coils like many assume) are also shared by the Model 6. Lastly, the JE-1200 active pre-amp mid-boost circuitry makes these pickups just scream! The on-off toggle switches give the player a myriad of sound options.
A great looking, great playing, wildly versatile guitar mated to arguably the most comfortable neck ever made. Just a few weeks ago, here on eBay, I saw a Pearl White Model 4 with a seriously huge blemish (putting it politely) right through both the Pearl White and the refrigerator white primer/base coat bid up to/sell for $720. This guitar likely plays better, certainly looks better, and can be yours for less.
Remember boys and girls (our last customer was a professional woman), this guitar plays! Think I'm kidding? My girlfriend called me out once she realized I hadn't touched my daily player in over two weeks ("One day for 4 hours straight while I was trying to sleep!" - the gf) in favor of this very guitar. So enjoy her, as I certainly have, and don't feel bad about driving your significant other up the wall for doing so. I didn't. icon smile 1987 Jackson/charvel Model 4 | Ship | No Reserve
