In 1988, after two straight years of explosive sales, Charvel added a few very tasty pieces of candy to their third year import lineup. Stuff like the introduction of the reverse headstock, available on then brand new Models 3DR, 7, 8, and 88. Of the half-dozen new models the first reverse headstocked 3DR was the most popular addition. They also added several factory finishes such as Candy Apple Red, Burgundy Mist, Fire Crackle, and Rainbow Crackle. Of those half-dozen new finishes Fire Crackle was the most popular addition. Here's a guitar that combines both, which is not an easy combination to find.
The electronics from a distance look simple: single-coil in the neck, humbucker in the bridge, volume knob, and 3-way switch. But that's where it gets you. Yes, Jackson J100 single-coil in the neck. Yes, Jackson J80C humbucker in the bridge. Yes, a volume knob. No, not a 3-way switch. It's a factory JE-0005 5-way "super-switch" that allows for coil-splitting. Positions 1, 3, and 5 are the standard neck only, neck + bridge, and bridge only respectively. Positions 2 and 4 coil-split the bridge Jackson J80C humbucker and pair it with the neck J100 single-coil to give you more strat-like sounds. The J80C humbucker was designed with coil-splittng in mind and it's at its finest in this guitar. The combination of 5-way super switch, J80C humbucker and J100 single coil provide a myriad of sounds to play with. The bridge is the factory Floyd Rose-licensed Jackson JT-6 which has a tremolo route for extra pull up space.
Condition? Easily a 9.5 out of 10. Any flaw that can be found is subtle. The famous Charvel pointy headstock retains its original silhouette and is near perfect. The back of the neck is smooth with no large impacts or chips hindering your hand while playing. The body is free of war stories. It has a few minor blemishes that come along with any 23-year-old guitar but is overall better than average for its age. The only chip to expose the white base coat or wood was one small strip on the bottom of the guitar (near the jack) that went down to the wood but was nicely touched up with black. There are no signs of pick scratches, buckle rash, hazing, etc. It's got its flaws but I dare you to find them all on one pass. They keep themselves hidden that well. 
The one-year-only factory Fire Crackle finish is beautiful. Like every flamed or quilt-top maple guitar, crackle finishes vary. It is just its nature. You could not reproduce an exact copy of any crackle finish. And like a flamed/quilt-top maple guitar, the quality varies. This Fire Crackle finish is one of the highest quality examples. There are not big patches of black with thick lines of the red/orange/yellow undercoat. This is a much more detailed and intricate example of the popular Fire Crackle finish, with hundreds of thin streams running between small islands of black. 
This guitar is not one to wait on because while you do someone is sure to swipe it out from under you. A Fire Crackle Model 3DR in excellent condition. You don't see those every day and you won't start to. With every day that passes, these guitars are getting older and more banged up. This is as near flawless as you are going to find. If you pass on this guitar because of a few subtle flaws and bet on finding a flawless Fire Crackle Charvel Model 3DR any time soon, you're likely to lose.
