RARE 1988 JACKSON/CHARVEL MODEL 4M

For Model Series fans, strike that, for Model Series experts, strike that, for serious Model Series aficionados, the 4M is the crown jewel of Model Series bolt-ons. Why is that? Imagine the high-quality and professional range of sounds only found in Models 4 and 6 with the responsive, bright, and bouncy raw tones that can only be had from an all maple neck and fretboard. It literally is the best of both worlds. It truly is unique and the very best sounding bolt-on in the entire Model Series lineup. Most of you reading this have never had the opportunity to play one. That's because you never see one. They were only made one year - 1988 - and few people then recognized the advantage of teaming a maple fretboard with the sophisticated Model 4 and 6 wiring and pickup package.

If you spend every day of your life looking for a 4M, like I do, you'll find a handful for sale per year. In 2010, I found two - all year. The first was in Florida. It was Burgundy Mist and near mint condition. I called the guy 30 minutes after he posted the ad and he told me it was sold. He claimed he took 5 calls in the first 15 minutes and sold it to the fourth caller for just under $900. The other one I found was in Southern California. It was in the extremely rare finish of Candy Apple Red. I called immediately to learn that it was sold already. The guy had listed it at 3pm and was expecting the buyer after dinner that same day to pick it up. That one sold for $800.

Fast forward to 2011 when we acquired this guitar. The first time I plugged her in, I quickly found out what her story was. She's a player through and through, and her condition reflects that. She shows evidence of wear, but she's also been around almost 24 years. Throughout the series of extra-large photographs provided, you can see numerous dings, scratches, general wear, etc. However, despite many flaws in the paint, nothing chipped off significant amounts of wood, and that includes the famous Charvel pointy headstock which is still in excellent shape. But once you plug in, you soon forget that she has any flaw.

Electronically, she looks as though she was never tampered with. One look in the control cavity almost certainly confirms that. The Jackson J50BC/J200/J200 combination with the JE-1200 active pre-amp mid-boost is as rocking as ever. The Floyd Rose-licensed Jackson JT-6 is in great shape and has no problem keeping in tune. All of the on/off pickup selector toggles are wired properly and provide a multitude of possible pickup combinations. Her electronics are perfect.

Only about one in every hundred (and that's being liberal) standard production guitars really play. This particular 4M belongs in that small 1% group. The girl plays! She has been known to fool an unknowing listener, producing neck-through quality sound and tone despite her bolt-on construction. It makes up for her present but numerous cosmetic flaws, and then some. Sure, you could find a 4M with less cosmetic issues but I highly doubt that it would play anywhere close to as well as this 4M.

She's a great example of the elusive 4M, and frankly, the best playing and best sounding bolt-on in the entire Model Series lineup. No Model Series collection can be complete without a bona fide, factory-original Model 4M. So here's YOUR chance that comes around once every other never. Chance of a lifetime, boys... chance of a lifetime.
