If there's one thing in life a man should never compromise on, it's his guitar. Money comes and goes. So do your women. But finding that ONE guitar, that ONE very special guitar, is truly like finding your life-long mate and can prove the most permanent source of enjoyment over the course of your entire life. Okay, women? Money? It's a little over the top. In ways I'm kidding, but in ways I'm certainly not.
So let's say you've owned a ton of Charvels, or a virtual boatload of Jacksons, yet you're still left longing for that one guitar that satisfies every one of your cravings, needs, and desires. Enter the 1991 Charvel 650 XL/Custom! Here she is. Problem solved. Your life-long mate in the form of a guitar.
With the suspension of manufacture of the 750XL, last built in the 1990 model year, the 650 Custom was Charvel's top-of-the-line import for 1991. It was their very best. And playing this example of this very rare guitar positively proves why. She's amazing. This guitar makes you sound more accomplished, more talented, and more professional than perhaps you actually are (lol). I would DEFINITELY love to claim that wasn't true for me when I played it, but sadly, it's very true. This guitar makes ME sound better than I ever have at any point in my entire guitar-playing life. Let's face it - whenever you're playing a guitar you currently own, how often does it arise where it crosses your mind "Damn. If that just had a little more edge to it, a little more bite, if that was just smoother, or thicker, or more vibrant... that would sound so cool!" But, your current rig just cannot deliver that extra something, that extra special tonal quality that truly make you sound like a pro. This guitar does all that. It gives you that extra oomph. It transcends you to that ultimate and final level of sound.
How does the 650 Custom accomplish that?
High-quality neck-through construction is certainly responsible for most of what sets this guitar apart. The tried and true electronics, previously used in the top-of-the-line Model Series, include Jackson J200 bi-level stacked humbuckers in neck and middle positions with a J50BC driving the bus from the bridge position. You control all three pickups via a 5-way switch. Your tone is further enhanced by the active JE-1200 pre-amp resulting in an expanded, much more vibrant, deep and fuller sound. The Floyd Rose-licensed, German-made, Schaller JT-590 double locking tremolo is a reliable and professional piece of hardware that emulates a Floyd Rose II in every way.
Not to mention, she looks good. The fully bound neck and headstock is really beautiful and exquisitely made. Genuine Mother of Pearl shark fin inlays give it that super sharp Soloist look. The paint is remarkable. I don't think I've ever seen a more vibrant and alive metalflake factory paint job before. They call the color Metallic Blue, and trust me, they meant METALLIC! One of the best parts of this coolest blue you've ever seen is Charvel used it everywhere but the fretboard. The entire back, sides, top, neck, and even the headstock face are treated in this, one of the most beautiful metallic blues you've ever seen. The matching headstock is particularly pleasing. This paint job is alive. Usually, any trick paint - like a metallic, a candy, a pearl, etc - is nearly impossible to pick up for you in photographs. But, examine the extra-large photographs for yourself and you will immediately see the energy oozing from this remarkable paint job which refused to be suppressed by the camera.
That's cool. All that stuff describes the guitar when made back in 1991. But what is it NOW? It's in remarkably great condition being it's now gone over its 20th birthday. While not literally flawless, it is without any significant mars, dings, scratches, etc! She is in beautiful condition and that makes finding a guitar like her extremely difficult. 20+ years old now and still an absolute "head turner". This guitar has it all. It's the single instrument where the "Hey, look at me" meets the "OMG, listen to the tone on that guitar". Seriously.
Don't bother sending me offers on this one. This is so rare that someone will likely be purchasing this guitar while you're typing out your offer. If you want a cheaper guitar, look elsewhere. There is absolutely nothing cheap on, nor about, THIS guitar! This is the one, fellas.
